What is .Net ?

.Net (pronounced as dot net) is a framework developed by Microsoft.The .NET Framework consists of the Common Language Runtime (CLR), the Framework Class Library (FCL) and ASP.Net. CLR acts as a manager that manages the code at run time and also provides memory management, security, thread management and remoting.

A Microsoft server-side Web technology. ASP.NET is an object-oriented programming based technology used to make web applications. Every element in an ASP.NET page is treated as an object and is run on the server. The CLR compiles the ASP.Net page to a native machine code which is run on the processor. ASP.NET is used to create Web pages and Web services and is an key element of Microsoft’s .NET framework.

.Net being easier to learn is preferred over Java by many students. You can use the .NET Framework to develop the following types of applications and services:

• Console applications
• Windows GUI applications
• ASP.NET applications
• Service-oriented applications using Windows Communication Foundation (WCF)
• Workflow-enabled applications using Windows Workflow Foundation (WF)
